Few places in the world can produce images of white powdered sandy beaches, pristine turquoise waters and tropical palm-tree paradise. Zanzibar is one of them. I can safely say, I found my personal slice of paradise there.

Zanzibar is rich in culture and marine life but when it comes to beaches, it’s hard to beat it; sands are pristine white and water is surreal blue. There are plenty great beaches on the island but here are my top five spots to get you started thinking about this paradise as your next holiday destination.

1. Paje

Paje is located on the South East of Zanzibar. It is referred as a kite surfing mecca and is popular not only for the most beautiful beach on the island but also for water sports. It is by far my favorite spot in Zanzibar.

Low tide is really awesome, leaving only wavy sand patches and curly shells around, which is perfect for reef walking and sunbathing with no seaweed dangling around your feet.

There are many excellent restaurants and cafes with a wide selection of accommodation right on the beach, and if you want to try something fun, head to a nearby kite surfing station to book a lesson or to rent an equipment if you’re a pro.

2/3 Nungwi and Kendwa

Nungwi and Kendwa is said to have best full moon parties on the island therefore it attracts younger, backpacking crowd. There is a number of bars but it still remains chilled out and quiet during the day. It also has best beaches for swimming due to the tide that doesn’t head out too far. Both beaches are only 3km apart and makes it easy if you want to spend a day in each without moving. You should also watch the dreamy sunset as it is indeed an unforgettable experience.

4. Matemwe

If you prefer some time alone, try Matemwe beach. Here, you can really escape to serenity and walk on a beach for miles without meeting another soul. Area is also popular with private luxury resorts promising a relaxing stay as nearby village life goes at an attractively sleepy and quite pace.

5. Jambiani

When I arrived in Jambiani the only people spending time on the beach were local boys who were playing football and few kids digging the seaweed. Jambiani is miles of startling white sand and has a sense of rustic charm and personality, still untouched by the commercial tourism. As with most of coast in the island, the tides change the beach dramatically and swimming in the sea at low-tide is pretty difficult. Think of the relaxation that can be found on a beach that is far away from it all and will isolate you from chaotic world.

The entire island  is filled with natural beauty everywhere you look. No matter which beach you choose, you can be assured to be surrounded by the laid back spirit of Zanzibar.

Thinking of visiting Zanzibar soon? Let me help you planning your next vacation.
